Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 16.37.24If you had any worries or concerns that Director Gary Ross’s successor would be turning this sequel into a Twilight esq format, where each film has its own unique stamp per director, and the lead character looks more and more bizarre as the films progress, then fear not, as The Hunger Games – Catching Fire  continues the franchise brilliantly.

In the second installment of the hugely popular film adaptation, Tribute victors of the 74th Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem. As a result, President Snow decides to hold the 75th Hunger Games in which all previous victors will once again fight against each other.

If you have been a fan of the books and then watched the first film, you may have felt a little short changed in terms of the detail throughout the Games section itself. Catering to a 12a audience, the first installment of this franchise lacked some of the more graphic scenes of violence throughout, and replaced this with clever jump cuts and edits to keep the action flowing. I for one, was one of those people, and felt slightly underwhelmed when walking out of that original viewing.Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 16.40.18

However, this second film seems to have found its feet much more – realizing that there is a large share in terms of older audience members, it quite purposefully takes more risks. There is a whipping scene involving Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) the shooting of an old man who dares to acknowledge the revolution, and a very unceremonious punch to the face for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). Although these are all wincing to the eye, they are a refreshing progression for the film, and as the film tackles more grown up subject matter, you very much feel like you’re watching a much more grown up film.Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 16.37.46

Once again the lead characters are portrayed well. Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen is brooding and thoughtful, more of the relationship between herself and Hemsworths Gale is explored, and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta Mellark has realized that he must suppress his feelings in order to play the game and put on a great show. There is also an influx of new cast members (all the other Tributes get killed off in the previous film – in the style of a less brutal Battle Royale!) and one of the biggest surprises of this is Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair. With a flawless American accent, a smile to melt a lot of hearts in the female share of the audience, this British actor will probably use this character to cement his place in the Hollywood heart throb elite – Robert Pattinson better watch out!

Out with the old and in with the new is the way this second running of the film works, the style has been cleverly matched by Director Francis Lawrence to its predecessor and not a minute of filming is wasted. Even if you’re coming to the movie having loved the book, its truthful approach to what is written will be a welcome relief, and it may even hold some surprises for you too. Plenty of action for everyone, some eye candy for both boys and girls, and a very enjoyable film to watch. You will not be disappointed!

Feeling withdrawal symptoms now that Twilight Saga has come to an end? I hear you…so what on earth are we going to do now? Well, more like what in the universe are we going to do? It seems that Twilight author Stephenie Meyer is here to save the day. Vampires, werewolves can finally move aside as we now get in touch with our intergalactic alien self!

The Host brings us a batch of rising new stars, and they’re pretty much home grown. Saoirse Ronan is the hottest young actress off the Emerald Isle, Screen Shot 2013-03-30 at 13.25.07and Max Irons seems to have inherited his dad’s talent for acting, and now they’re both together in one film – and mostly locking lips throughout the whole film! (see exhibit A!)

If that doesn’t get you booking your seat straight after reading this article then how about another great incentive? To celebrate the films release this weekend, I’ve just noticed that the fabulous Odeon cinema are giving you lot a chance to win a snazzy signed poster of the film. So if you want a chance of winning it (these rising stars may be worth a lot of money one day) then you better head to its Facebook page here.

You only have until Monday 1st April to snap this awesome prize up, so get on the case.

In the meantime, here’s a little more about the film, and its trailer.

Earth has been inhabited by an intellegent alien species known as “Souls.” Although an incredibly peaceful race, Souls can only survive by being inserted into a host body, taking control of their minds. In an effort to discover the secret whereabouts of some of the last remaining human resistances, the Soul Wanderer has been inserted into the human being Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), who was captured while attempting to locate her family. After insertion, Wanderer comes to realize an unsettling fact- Melanie has not faded away in consciousness, and in fact is putting up walls in her mind to prevent her family from being found. As time passes and Wanderer tries to break Melanie’s walls, she begins to feel sympathetic toward the humans Melanie loves so dearly- her brother Jamie and her partner, Jared Howe. Wanderer becomes torn between loyalty to her own race, trying to give information to the argumentative Seeker assigned to her, and her blossoming love for the humans in her memories. As Wanderer’s and Melanies trust builds, they embark on a journey through the desert to find the resistance, nearly dying in the process. Wanderer awakens to find herself captive in the den of the enemy, and realizes her problems have just begun: the humans want her dead, the doctor wants to experiment on her, and she may have accidentally lead the Seekers to some of the very last humans remaining.

Happy Easter everyone, enjoy! x

My debut on Channel 5 News….

21 Nov

So everyone knows I like to talk a lot about film… sometimes I can’t shut up, but I was gobsmacked when Channel 5 News asked me to be their film critic for the Twilight premiere in London. Naturally I obliged, and well, here’s the end result. A fantastic feature by 5 News, and my twenty seconds of fame is at about 2mins 14secs in… enjoy watching.

Moment in the spotlight for Channel 5 News….

15 Nov

Well what a difference a day makes…

As I walked past the Twihards in Leicester Square, penned up in their camping gear like cattle, my mind wasn’t on RPatz’s twinkly diamond vampire face or KStew’s newly acquired red contact lenses… it was on what makes this phenomenon so big and would I be able to chat about it concisely and coherently.

Why was I so nervous? Well, they may have been strolling down the red carpet that evening, but yesterday morning I was preparing to make my screen debut for none other than the brilliant Channel 5 News. What a difference a day makes, on Tuesday I was sat at my desk with a hot cup of coco when the phone rang with 5 News asking if I’d like to be a film critic discussing this films’ success and future. Absobloominglootly!!!

So in the space of 24 hours I was hot footing it to Leicester Square ready for my close up and as soon as I get the link I’ll share it with you all. What a coup! Very humbled to be asked, and hopefully its the start of more great things to come. In the mean time, here are a couple of shots of me on the programme.

Thanks for all your support and reading my little blog x
